Mnisóta Dakhóta Iápi Oyanke – Dakota Language Summer Institute 2021

Tokštá Dakhódia Wóuŋhdakapte!

•Dakota Teacher Training – June 14-26

•Absolute Beginner/Survival Dakota – June 14-26

•Level 1 Beginner Dakota – June 28 – July 10

•Level 2 Intermediate Dakota – June 28 – July 10

During this year’s Summer Institute, there will be a course for teachers in effective language teaching methods, and 3 levels of language courses, in addition to many cultural activities that everyone can participate in.

It is possible this year to enroll in both the teacher course and a language course, but those enrolling in the teacher course must have basic, conversational proficiency in Dakota language. If you do not yet have basic conversational proficiency in Dakota, please sign up only for the language courses this year.

The teaching methods course will be offered online. This course will be offered June 14-26 (5pm-8pm Central Time M-F).

If you are absolutely new to learning Dakota language, please sign up for the Survival Dakota course. This course will be offered online. This course will be offered June 14-26 (12:30 – 1:30pm Central Time M-F) . Once you have completed this course, you may also enroll in Dakota Level 1, which this course will prepare you for.

If you know some vocabulary or phrases in Dakota already, but can not express very many ideas, you will want to sign up for Dakota Level 1. Also sign up for this course if you signed up for the Dakota Beginners course. This course will be offered in-person ONLY if it is safe and healthy to do so, otherwise it will be offered online with only outdoor, in-person activities on Saturdays, as described below. This course will be offered June 28 – July 10 (10am-12pm Central Time M-F).

If you can express various ideas in Dakota but wish to learn more advanced grammar and vocabulary, sign up for Dakota Level 2. This course will be offered in-person ONLY if it is safe and healthy to do so, otherwise it will be offered online with only outdoor, in-person activities on Saturdays, as described below. This course will be offered June 28 – July 10 (10am-12pm Central Time M-F).

For each of the courses above, it is possible to earn either CEUs or undergraduate college credit, but these may require payment to the accrediting institution.

Courses for everyone:

We strongly encourage everyone to plan on attending the following:

Activity course (you choose from the available activities, choices to be announced in Spring) June 28 – July 10

Woksape time (different guest speakers each day, including first speakers of Dakota) June 28 – July 10

Saturday gatherings (in-person, outdoor activities that allow all levels of learners to participate in fun Dakota games and exchanges) June 26th, July 3rd & July 10th (10am-3pm Central Time, location in MN TBD)

Please note that everyone is encouraged to attend the opening and closing gatherings on June 26 and July 10!

We will announce the final location of Saturday gatherings, the final format (online or in-person) of the language courses, and the full list of activity choices and guest speakers in mid-May, when we will ask you to definitively confirm your registration. Please keep an eye out for emails from us updating you on the details.
